Grands Approved in Henderson County to Strengthen Deputy Safety and Vehicle Protection

Henderson County is taking steps to enhance law enforcement safety after the Commissioners Court approved two grant applications on Tuesday aimed at protecting Sheriff’s Office deputies and improving vehicle security.

The first application seeks Fiscal Year 2026 funding to retrofit existing vehicles and equip new ones with bullet-resistant components, including ballistic glass and bulletproof windshields. According to Sheriff Botie Hillhouse, the program is new and was recently approved by the Governor’s Office and Legislature, making $5 million available statewide. The grant carries no local match requirement, so the county would not need to contribute additional funds if approved. Patrol units and mental health response vehicles are the initial priority for the upgrades.

The second grant application is for the recurring Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program, which covers half the cost of new vests for deputies. The program allows the Sheriff’s Office to maintain up-to-date personal protective equipment, ensuring officers have reliable gear for daily operations.

Both motions were passed unanimously, reflecting the county’s commitment to keeping deputies safe while they serve the community.

These grants represent a proactive approach to law enforcement safety, combining protective gear for officers with advanced vehicle upgrades to reduce risks in high-threat situations.
