GLADEWATER, Texas – On Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Gladewater Police Officers Nicole Cowan and Shaun Smith attempted to stop a white Chevrolet Suburban driven by Deyron Smith, 36, who was known to have outstanding felony warrants.

When officers initiated the stop, Smith fled, leading police on a pursuit that left Gladewater city limits and entered Upshur County. The chase ended when Smith lost control of the vehicle on Crabtree Road, crashing into two trees. The Suburban sustained extensive damage, and Smith, who was the sole occupant, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries.

During the investigation, officers discovered approximately 2.8 grams of suspected black tar heroin inside the vehicle. Smith now faces additional charges, including Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance – Penalty Group 1 (Over 1g, Under 4g), a second-degree felony, and an existing Upshur County warrant for Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance – Penalty Group 1 with a $20,000 bond.

Upshur County Constable James Casey and deputies with the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office assisted Gladewater officers during the pursuit and arrest.
