Greenville Police Department Offers Free Women's Self-Defense Class

The Greenville Police Department is offering a free Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Systems course, providing women with basic physical defense training and strategies for personal safety. The 12-hour program combines classroom lecture with hands-on physical defense techniques.

The RAD System focuses on risk recognition, awareness, reduction, and avoidance to help participants minimize their chances of becoming a victim. Students will learn simple, intuitive physical defense techniques designed for easy learning and retention, culminating in dynamic simulation training against "attackers" in protective equipment. This is not a martial arts program.

The class will be taught by four to five certified RAD instructors, all of whom are police officers and vetted female volunteers. The program is offered at no charge, thanks to donations from individuals, businesses, and community groups that have funded equipment and instructor training.

While the training will be physically demanding, it is open to women of all fitness levels, with participants having the option to opt out of any uncomfortable areas. Women who are pregnant or are being treated for an injury (e.g., a back injury) should not take the class until medically cleared. No men, other than instructors, will be allowed in the classroom.

Participants should wear comfortable workout attire, including athletic shoes (no sandals or flip-flops), and may wish to bring water, snacks, and/or a hand towel. The minimum age for participation is 13. Those under 16 must have an adult family member (mother, sister, aunt, etc.) attend with them. Ages 16 and 17 may attend with signed parental consent. There is no maximum age limit.

The class will be held on August 18, 21, 25, and 28, 2025 (Mondays and Thursdays), from 6 PM to 9 PM each evening at the Fletcher Warren Civic Center. Attendees are asked to commit to attending all four sessions if they register.

Registration is required. To register or for more information, email instructor Brandon West at bcwest@ci.greenville.tx.us. More information about the RAD System can be found at www.rad-systems.com.
