On Friday, July 21st, at approximately 10:55 am, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) was called to the scene of a fatal crash that resulted in the loss of four lives. The incident occurred at the intersection of FM 2648 and US 271 in Lamar County.
According to the preliminary investigation, a 2000 Peterbilt towing a trailer, driven by 84-year-old Clarence Fowler of Valiant, OK, was traveling westbound on FM 2648. At the same time, a 2013 Toyota Highlander, driven by 48-year-old Mary K Cooper of Hugo, OK, was heading southbound on US 271.
Tragically, Vehicle 1, driven by Clarence Fowler, failed to yield the right of way to Vehicle 2, operated by Mary K Cooper. As a result, Vehicle 2 collided with the trailer of Vehicle 1, causing devastating consequences.
Justice of the Peace Tim Risinger, who arrived at the scene, pronounced all occupants of Vehicle 2 deceased. The victims were identified as Mary K Cooper, 48 years old, of Hugo, OK, Janet K Carter, 61 years old, of Durant, OK, Koolasha U Green, 18 years old, of Hugo, OK, and a 16-year-old male juvenile from Hugo, OK. All occupants in Vehicle 2 had their seat belts on at the time of the crash.
Meanwhile, the driver of Vehicle 1, Clarence Fowler, remained uninjured. He had his seat belt fastened when the accident occurred.
