Scam Alert: Imposter Posing as Commerce Police Officer Demanding Gift Cards

The Commerce Police Department has issued a warning to the public regarding a scam where an individual is falsely claiming to be a Commerce Police Officer.

According to the department, the scammer contacts individuals and demands money, specifically requesting payment via gift cards to avoid arrest. The Commerce Police Department unequivocally states that they will never contact anyone by phone and request any form of financial payment.

Authorities emphasize that requests for funds to be sent through gift cards or cryptocurrency are common tactics used by scammers to facilitate the rapid and untraceable movement of money. Such requests should be considered a significant red flag, and individuals receiving them should immediately cease communication.

The Commerce Police Department urges anyone who is uncertain about the legitimacy of a communication purportedly from their department to contact them directly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at (903) 886-1139.
