Greenville Fire-Rescue Launches Swim Smart Series for Water Safety Month

As the summer heat returns and families head to the water, Greenville Fire-Rescue (GFR) is reminding the community that drowning is fast, silent, and preventable. In recognition of Water Safety Month, GFR is launching its annual "Swim Smart" educational series to promote safe swimming habits and raise awareness of drowning risks.

The free, three-week event takes place every Thursday evening from May 8 through May 22 at the Fletcher Warren Civic Center, located at 5501 Bus Hwy 69 S. Sessions run from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. and are open to all.

The schedule is as follows:

  • May 8: Public & Home Pool Safety, presented by Greenville Parks & Recreation and the Greenville Fire Department

  • May 15: Recognizing Pool Emergencies & Hands-Only CPR, presented by Hunt County AMR/EMS

  • May 22: Boating and Lake Safety, presented by the Texas Game Warden

Each session includes safety information, demonstrations, a complimentary light meal, and door prizes.

According to GFR, drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause for children ages 5 to 14. Eleven people die from unintentional drowning in the U.S. each day, most often in family pools.

Pre-registration is encouraged to help with meal planning. Register today by visiting https://gfdtx.online/SwimSmartGVL or calling 903-457-3150.
