Man Arrested in Sulphur Springs Traffic Stop After Meth and THC Edibles Found

Basil Scott Hammond

Basil Scott Hammond, 41, was arrested on January 23, 2025, after a traffic stop near North Davis Street and Connally Street in Sulphur Springs. Hopkins County Deputies conducted the stop after Hammond failed to properly yield at a designated stop sign.

During the traffic stop, deputies observed Hammond displaying signs of nervousness, including shaking hands and avoiding eye contact. This prompted further investigation, and a K-9 unit was deployed to the scene. The K-9 alerted deputies to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle uncovered multiple packages of THC-infused edibles, 98 grams of methamphetamine (including packaging), and drug paraphernalia such as a digital scale and packaging materials.

Hammond was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance in Penalty Group 1/1-B between 4 and 200 grams. He was transported to the Hopkins County Jail, where he remains in custody.
