On November 19, 2024, at approximately 5:28 p.m., McKinney Police officers responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 1400 block of Amscott Street. Witnesses reported that the driver of a white Cadillac had crashed and was waving a handgun upon exiting the vehicle.
The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Malik Riley of Colorado, briefly left the crash scene before returning to retrieve items from the vehicle. When officers arrived, Riley ignored commands and fled on foot toward the 600 block of East Graham Street.
During the foot pursuit, officers deployed a Taser, which was ineffective. Riley then displayed a handgun and turned toward the officers, prompting one officer to fire a single shot, striking Riley in the abdomen.
Riley was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. No officers were injured during the incident.
A records check revealed Riley was wanted in Colorado for weapons-related charges, with a full extradition warrant issued for his arrest.
The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, as per McKinney Police Department protocol. Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to contact their Tip Line at (972) 547-3480 or email CrimeTipLine@mckinneytexas.org.
