Franklin County Emergency Management and Franklin County Sheriff's Office Provide Public Information Update Due to Storm Damage

Following the severe storms that caused widespread power outages and damage in Franklin County, emergency management officials and the Franklin County Sheriff's Office held a press conference today to provide a public information update on the situation.

Electricity Restored to Majority of Franklin County, but Some Areas Still Affected

Good news came for the majority of Franklin County residents as power has been restored to most areas. However, there are still pockets without electricity. According to officials, approximately 7% of the county is still experiencing power outages. Emergency services will continue to work diligently throughout the week to restore power to those affected areas.

Distribution of Emergency Supplies

In response to the storm damage, the distribution of essential emergency supplies will begin today at 11:00 am. The distribution point is located in front of the Mount Vernon ISD Administration building. Officials emphasize that the distribution of supplies will be limited on a case-by-case basis to ensure equitable access to those in need.

Cooling Stations Provide Relief from the Heat

To alleviate the challenges of enduring high temperatures without power, the cooling stations established earlier will remain operational through the end of the week. The Airport Cooling Station will be open 24 hours a day, providing a refuge for residents seeking respite from the heat. Additionally, the First Baptist Church Cooling Stations will be open from 8 am to 6 pm, providing another option for relief.

Spoiled Food Disposal Arrangements Made

With power outages lasting for an extended period, many residents have faced the issue of spoiled food. The City of Mount Vernon has made arrangements for two trash collections this week to accommodate the disposal of spoiled food. Residents can place their spoiled food in bags weighing 40 lbs or less and deposit them in the poly cart. The Franklin County Dump will also be open throughout the week from 7 am to 3:30 pm for the disposal of spoiled food.

Medical Task Force Assisting Homebound Residents

The newly established medical task force has made significant progress in reaching out to individuals who are homebound and in need of medical assistance. Within the first day of operation, the task force has already made contact with over 180 individuals requiring aid. These efforts will continue in the coming days. Additionally, the Mount Vernon ISD distribution point will serve as a base camp for state and military medical personnel who will be providing services to Franklin County and surrounding areas still affected by power outages.

Meal Distribution and In-home Assistance Available

Recognizing the importance of meeting basic needs during this challenging time, meal distribution events have been organized. Today, hot dogs and hamburgers will be distributed at the Franklin County Sheriff's Office from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Furthermore, additional meal distribution events are being planned while local stores and restaurants resupply their stocks.

For individuals who lack transportation to access essential services, in-home assistance resources are available. If you or someone you know requires assistance with any of the aforementioned services, please contact the Franklin County Sheriff's Office at 903-537-4539.

As Franklin County continues to recover from the storm's impact, emergency management officials and the Franklin County Sheriff's Office are working diligently to ensure the well-being of the community. Regular updates will be provided as progress is made towards restoring power and assisting affected residents.
