On June 5, 2023, at approximately 5:35 am, an inmate at the Grayson County Jail was found unresponsive in his cell. The inmate was identified as 65-year-old Haywood Riggins from Denison, Texas.
When found, Riggins appeared to be having a medical issue. Jail medical staff and Sherman Fire Rescue performed life saving measures. Riggins passed away shortly after medical assistance started.
Riggins had been in jail since June 2, 2023, for driving while intoxicated.
The death is under investigation by the Texas Rangers, which is standard procedure when an inmate dies while in custody.
