Bois D’Arc Lake in Fannin County Opens to Public Recreation

Bois D’Arc Lake, the newest major reservoir in Texas in over 30 years, is now open to the public. Owned and operated by the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD), the lake is situated northeast of Bonham, TX, in Fannin County, TX. Serving as a vital source of drinking water for the region, NTMWD commenced water delivery in March 2023. Recent rainfall has ensured sufficient lake levels for public access.

Visitors to Bois D’Arc Lake can partake in various recreational activities such as boating, fishing, hunting, and picnicking. The lake features three public access areas equipped with boat launch ramps, day-use picnic spots, and restrooms. NTMWD oversees the lake's operations, boat ramps, and shoreline management, while law enforcement, hunting, boating, and fishing regulations, as well as public safety, are handled by the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

“As we celebrate the opening of Bois d’Arc Lake, we share in the anticipation and excitement this new recreational spot brings. We recognize that public access areas may be crowded in the upcoming weeks, especially during holidays and weekends. Throughout this time, we encourage patience and courtesy to fellow boaters, lake staff, and law enforcement.”, said Jenna Covington, Executive Director and General Manager of NTMWD.
