On Thursday, November 30, 2023, at approximately 8:00 PM, the Winnsboro Police Department, in collaboration with the Winnsboro ISD Police Department, responded to reports of shots fired in the vicinity of South Post Oak Street, near Winnsboro High School.
Upon reaching the 400 block of South Post Oak Street, officers discovered shell casings in front of a residence. Subsequently, additional calls reporting shots fired in various areas of town were received, prompting officers, assisted by the Wood County Sheriff's Office, to respond to those locations.
After an initial search proved unsuccessful in locating a suspect, officers returned to the 400 block of South Post Oak Street. An open door at the residence with the discovered shell casings caught their attention, leading to a thorough search. During this process, an empty handgun box was spotted on the kitchen counter.
Following the clearance of the residence, officers engaged with neighboring residents to gather potential witness information. It was during this interaction that officers noticed a pickup truck entering the driveway of the residence where the shell casings were found. The individual, identified as Roberto Lopez of Winnsboro, was approached, detained, and searched.
Officers discovered an empty magazine on Lopez's person, along with ammunition, a handgun, and another magazine inside his vehicle. Lopez reportedly admitted to firing his handgun into the air at multiple locations and acknowledged consuming alcoholic beverages.
As a result, Roberto Lopez was taken into custody on charges of Deadly Conduct, Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon, and Driving While Intoxicated.
