A tragic collision occurred earlier today at the intersection of state Highway 103 and state Highway 147, resulting in the death of a Shelby County Deputy. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers are currently conducting an investigation into the incident.
Preliminary findings indicate that around 7:30 a.m., a 2014 Peterbilt truck tractor semi-trailer was traveling west on S.H. 103. The deputy, who was operating a marked patrol unit, was heading north on S.H. 147 and allegedly failed to yield to the truck tractor. As a result, the patrol unit collided with the trailer portion of the semi-trailer.
The driver of the truck tractor, identified as 54-year-old William Lyons from San Augustine, escaped the collision unharmed.
Tragically, the deputy sustained fatal injuries in the crash.
"It is with a heavy heart that Sheriff Kevin W. Windham announces the passing of our deputy, Matthew Pierson, in the fatal accident that occurred this morning. A memorial has been set up at the Shelby County Sheriff's Office for the public to leave condolences.
