GRIMES COUNTY, Texas - A man has been charged with murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following a fatal shooting Tuesday evening in the Keith area of Grimes County.
Richard Butterworth III was arrested in connection with the death of Vicente Yanez, according to the Grimes County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies were dispatched at approximately 5 p.m. Sept. 22 after the sheriff's office received a 911 call reporting a disturbance and possible shooting.
When deputies arrived, they found Yanez dead at the scene. A second man was also located and detained while authorities investigated.
The Grimes County Sheriff's Office began investigating with assistance from the Grimes County District Attorney's Office and Texas Rangers.
Investigators said they determined Butterworth was armed with a pistol when he became involved in a physical altercation with Yanez. During the confrontation, Butterworth fired the gun and fatally struck Yanez, according to the sheriff's office.
Authorities did not disclose what led to the altercation or identify the second man who was initially detained.
Those involved in the incident were taken to the Grimes County Sheriff's Office for interviews while investigators gathered evidence.
Following the investigation, Butterworth was charged with murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The sheriff's office did not provide details about the circumstances underlying the two aggravated assault charges or identify the people involved in those allegations.
Butterworth remained in the Grimes County Jail. Bond information was not included in the sheriff's office announcement.
Yanez's next of kin has been notified.
The Texas Department of Public Safety, Navasota Police Department and Grimes County Precinct 1 Constable's Office also responded to the scene.
