GREENVILLE, Texas - Drivers who use Interstate 30 in Greenville will need to adjust their routes beginning Oct. 2, when the Texas Department of Transportation permanently closes the eastbound exit for Lamar Street.
TxDOT said eastbound Exit 97 will close permanently as part of an effort to improve traffic operations and safety for motorists traveling on I-30 and its frontage roads.
After the closure, drivers traveling east on I-30 who need to reach Lamar Street should take Exit 96 for Spur 302/Downtown. Motorists can then remain on the eastbound frontage road and continue to Lamar Street.
Message boards have been installed in the area to notify drivers ahead of the change.
Unlike a temporary construction closure, Exit 97 will not reopen after the work is completed. The change will permanently shift Lamar Street-bound traffic to Exit 96 and the frontage road.
The closure is currently scheduled for Oct. 2, although TxDOT said the timing could be delayed or altered because of weather, mechanical problems or material supply issues.
TxDOT is asking motorists traveling through the construction area to reduce their speed, watch for barricades and traffic-control signs and remain alert for road crews. Drivers are also urged to avoid distractions while traveling through the work zone.
