LUFKIN, Texas - A late-night pursuit involving a U-Haul box truck ended with a wanted Lufkin woman jumping into a pond and refusing to come out until an Angelina County sheriff’s deputy went into the water and removed her, authorities said.
Angelina County Sheriff’s Office deputies were patrolling the Hudson community around midnight early Friday when they observed a traffic violation involving a U-Haul box truck near Walnut Hill Road and State Highway 94.
Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver allegedly accelerated away from patrol units.
The pursuit continued along Highway 94 before turning onto FM 1194 toward Peavy Switch, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The U-Haul eventually turned onto Randall Palmore Lane, where the driver stopped the vehicle and ran from deputies.
Authorities said the woman then jumped into a pond as deputies pursued her on foot.
Deputies attempted to convince the driver to leave the pond voluntarily, but she refused, according to the Sheriff’s Office. One of the deputies then entered the water and removed her.
The driver was identified as Shayna Marie Allen, 36, of Lufkin.
After taking Allen into custody, deputies determined she was wanted on a parole warrant.
The Sheriff’s Office said additional charges stemming from the pursuit were filed against Allen. Authorities said she will be held without bond on the warrant from the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles.
According to the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office, Allen previously received a 10-year sentence for burglary and has a history of felony and misdemeanor arrests. County records show 18 previous jail booking events involving Allen, the agency said.
No injuries were reported by the Sheriff’s Office in connection with the vehicle pursuit, foot chase or Allen’s removal from the pond.
