GREENVILLE, Texas - Dr. Joe Lopez has led Greenville Independent School District since May 2024, bringing more than two decades of experience in public education and a career that has included roles ranging from classroom teacher and principal to central office administrator and superintendent.
Lopez joined Greenville ISD after serving as superintendent of Kermit ISD in West Texas. His background includes leadership positions in multiple Texas school districts, where his work has focused on academic achievement, career preparation, facilities, technology and programs designed to support students beyond the classroom.
Now leading Greenville ISD, Lopez has emphasized collaboration among educators, parents, students and the community while promoting what he describes as a "whole child" approach to education.
From Teacher to Superintendent
Lopez brought 24 years of educational experience with him when he arrived in Greenville.
His career has included serving as a teacher, middle and high school assistant principal, elementary and secondary principal and central office administrator.
Before his superintendent roles, Lopez served as Executive Director for State and Federal Programs at Mission CISD, where he provided guidance to 24 campuses serving approximately 16,000 students.
He later served as superintendent of Taft ISD and Kermit ISD. According to his district biography, both districts recorded academic gains under his leadership while also modernizing technology infrastructure and upgrading facilities.
At Kermit ISD, Lopez helped lead an effort that resulted in voters approving a $62.5 million bond in fall 2023. It was the district's first community-supported bond in 17 years.
During the 2022-23 school year, Kermit ISD also implemented a specialized Energy Pathway Program focused on the oil and gas industry. The district was one of four in the Texas-New Mexico region awarded the grant supporting the program.
Kermit ISD was also selected to implement the iLead Values Based Student Leadership initiative in partnership with Education Service Center Region 18 and the Maxwell Leadership Foundation, with support from the Texas Education Agency.
Programs Focused on Students and Opportunities
Throughout his administrative career, Lopez has supported initiatives aimed at expanding academic and extracurricular opportunities for students.
Among the programs and initiatives associated with his leadership was the implementation of what his biography describes as the first full-immersion computer science elementary school in Central and South Texas.
Other initiatives have included Operation College Bound, College and Career Signing Days, an Early Learning Academy, the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools Program and the "Ready Set, Read" Summer Literacy Program, which provided students with home libraries.
Lopez has also emphasized maintaining balanced budgets while making funding available for student organizations and extracurricular activities.
His leadership philosophy centers on creating a school district culture in which students, employees and parents feel supported and involved in the educational process. He has worked with Campus Instructional Leadership Teams and community stakeholders to develop shared systems for making district decisions.
Finalist for Texas Superintendent of the Year
Lopez received statewide recognition for his work before coming to Greenville.
In 2023, he was selected as the ESC Region 18 Superintendent of the Year and advanced to become one of five finalists for the Texas Superintendent of the Year award.
His professional development has also included selection for Thompson's Executive Leadership Institute Superintendents Academy in Austin.
Earlier in his career, in 2014, Lopez was one of 15 administrators nationwide selected for the Superintendent Leadership Academy through the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents.
Educational Background
Lopez earned a bachelor's degree in Political Science and Public Management with a minor in English from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri.
He later earned a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Houston Baptist University and a Doctor of Education degree with a specialization in Educational Leadership and Management from Capella University.
Lopez and his wife, Michele, have four children. Two of their children attend Greenville ISD schools.
Since taking over Greenville ISD in 2024, Lopez has continued to emphasize student achievement, communication with families and community involvement as central parts of his approach to leading the district.
