KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — A Kaufman County Sheriff's deputy and a Forney police officer narrowly avoided being struck early Sunday morning after a passing vehicle crashed into a patrol unit while they were working on a freeway.
According to the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred on July 5 while the deputy and officer were assisting on a call along the highway.
Authorities said a passing vehicle collided with the Forney Police Department patrol vehicle, narrowly missing both first responders.
No injuries were reported, but officials said the close call highlights the dangers law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and tow operators face while working along Texas roadways.
The sheriff's office is reminding motorists to remain alert and comply with Texas' Move Over or Slow Down law whenever approaching emergency vehicles with flashing lights.
Under Texas law, drivers must move over one lane when it is safe to do so for law enforcement, emergency responders, tow trucks, utility vehicles, municipal waste trucks, TxDOT vehicles, and, since Sept. 1, 2025, animal control officers and parking enforcement vehicles displaying emergency lights.
If changing lanes is not possible, motorists are required to slow to 20 mph below the posted speed limit. On roads with speed limits of 25 mph or less, drivers must slow to 5 mph.
Officials also reminded drivers to avoid distractions and stay focused when approaching roadside emergency scenes.
Failure to comply with the Move Over or Slow Down law can result in fines of up to $1,250 for a first offense. Drivers who cause serious bodily injury while violating the law may face jail time and fines of up to $4,000.
