Carthage ISD Mourns Loss of State Champion Football Player James Morrow

CARTHAGE, Texas — Carthage Independent School District is mourning the loss of 2025 graduate and two-time state champion football player James Morrow, remembering him as a beloved teammate, student, and Bulldog whose impact extended far beyond the football field.

Morrow, 20, was one of two people killed in a shooting early Saturday morning outside a Whataburger in Marshall. Authorities have charged 19-year-old Davion McDale Brown with capital murder in connection with the shooting, which also left two other people injured.

In a statement released Monday, Carthage ISD, Carthage High School, and Carthage Bulldog Athletics reflected on Morrow's legacy both as an athlete and as a person.

"James was a Bulldog through and through," the statement read.

Morrow was a standout defensive tackle who helped lead Carthage to the 2022 and 2024 Class 4A Division II state football championships. During his high school career, he earned multiple All-District and All-State honors and was recognized as a key contributor to one of the most successful periods in the program's history.

School officials said his greatest legacy, however, was the joy he brought to those around him.

"The James Morrow we'll remember isn't defined by tackles or trophies," the district said. "He'll be remembered for the laugh you could hear from across the room, the smile that came so easily, the jokes with his teammates, and the personality that made James unmistakably him."

The district described Morrow as a beloved son, brother, teammate, friend, classmate, and Bulldog whose presence made locker rooms, classrooms, and bus rides brighter.

"There are no words that can truly ease the pain of a loss like this," the statement continued. "Today, we simply ask our Bulldog family to come together and surround James' family with our love, our prayers, and our unwavering support."

The statement concluded with a tribute to the young athlete's lasting place in the school community.

"James Morrow wore the C with pride, and his place in Bulldog history is forever secure. More importantly, his place in the hearts of those who knew and loved him will never be replaced. James Morrow will never be forgotten. Once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog."
