TEXARKANA, Texas — A Texarkana man wanted on multiple felony warrants was taken into custody Monday night after fleeing from police, barricading himself inside a residence, and prompting a response from the department's SWAT team.
According to the Texarkana Texas Police Department, Officers Jacob Miramontes and Macy Huddle spotted 40-year-old Kelvin Jones driving a Chevrolet Tahoe on West 14th Street at approximately 7:45 p.m. on June 22.
Knowing Jones was wanted on several felony warrants, the officers attempted to stop the vehicle. Instead of pulling over, investigators said Jones accelerated and drove directly to his residence in the 1300 block of Pine Street.
Jones reportedly jumped out of the Tahoe and ran into the home with officers close behind. Before officers could reach him, he slammed the front door shut and used his body weight to keep it closed.
Police said Jones then moved a refrigerator in front of the door and later added a sofa in an apparent effort to prevent officers from entering.
Despite repeated commands to surrender, Jones refused to come outside.
Because Jones was wanted on multiple felony warrants and was listed in the National Crime Information Center database as potentially armed and dangerous, the department's SWAT Team was called to assist.
SWAT officers established a perimeter around the residence while negotiators worked to make contact with Jones.
After several hours of negotiations, Jones surrendered and walked out of the residence at approximately 10 p.m. He was taken into custody without incident.
Before impounding the Chevrolet Tahoe, officers conducted an inventory of the vehicle and reportedly discovered methamphetamine and marijuana inside.
Jones was booked into the Bi-State Jail on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Marijuana.
He was also held on multiple outstanding warrants, including Arkansas Parole Violation, Texas Parole Violation, Probation Violation, Evading Arrest/Detention, and three warrants issued by the Texarkana Texas Municipal Court.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
Police credited patrol officers, SWAT personnel, and negotiators for bringing the situation to a peaceful conclusion.
