Two Kemp Residents Arrested on Child Sex Crime Charges Following Investigation

KEMP, Texas - Two Kemp residents have been arrested on multiple felony charges involving a child victim following an investigation by the Kemp Police Department.

According to police, officers and investigators, assisted by the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office, executed search warrants on Monday, June 1st,  at residences in the 800 block of N. Main Street and the 500 block of S. Main Street in Kemp.

As a result of the investigation, 40-year-old Tanya Smith was arrested and charged with:

  • Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child (First-Degree Felony)
  • Two Counts of Indecency with a Child (Second-Degree Felonies)
  • Assault Family Violence (Class A Misdemeanor)

Investigators also arrested 41-year-old Joshua Hagar, who was charged with:

  • Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child (First-Degree Felony)
  • Indecency with a Child (Second-Degree Felony)
  • Sexual Performance by a Child (First-Degree Felony)

Both suspects were transported to the Kaufman County Detention Center, where they remain in custody pending bond.

Police said the investigation began after authorities received information regarding allegations involving a child victim. Investigators conducted interviews, collected evidence, and developed probable cause that led to the issuance of search warrants and the arrests.

Due to the nature of the case and the involvement of a child victim, authorities said no identifying information about the victim will be released.

The Kemp Police Department said protecting children remains a top priority and thanked the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office and the Children's Advocacy Center for Kaufman County for their assistance during the investigation.

Officials noted the case remains active and ongoing. Investigators are continuing to review evidence and follow additional leads, and further charges or arrests may be possible.
