Man Arrested in Sherman for Impersonating Police Officer at Highway 75 Job Site

SHERMAN, Texas — A 45-year-old man was arrested Monday night after allegedly posing as a police officer while working a traffic control job along North Highway 75.

According to the Sherman Police Department, officers were notified around 8:24 p.m. on February 9 by the owner of a company that hires licensed law enforcement officers for traffic control at highway construction sites. The employer reported growing concerns that one of the individuals working under contract was not the commissioned officer he had claimed to be.

After conducting an internal review, the company contacted police.

Investigators confirmed that the identity of the person working the job did not match the officer he allegedly represented himself to be. Officers located the suspect in the 2900 block of North Highway 75, where he was seated inside a vehicle displaying “police” insignia and equipped with emergency lights. He was wearing clothing marked “police” and was in possession of a loaded firearm and other law enforcement-style equipment.

Police determined the suspect, identified as Charles Sedrick Lightner of Mckinney, does hold a Texas peace officer license. However, he is not currently employed or commissioned by any law enforcement agency.

Lightner was arrested and charged with Impersonating a Police Officer and Unlawfully Carrying a Weapon.
