Honey Grove Fire Department Addresses Absence From Jan. 31 Medical Call

HONEY GROVE, Texas — The Honey Grove Volunteer Fire Department says it is responding to community concerns after the department was not dispatched to a medical emergency on January 31 in the 500 block of Pecan Street.

According to officials, a 911 call reporting a medical emergency was placed to the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office that morning. The Fannin County Dispatch Center notified the Honey Grove Police Department and Allegiance EMS. Both agencies responded, and Allegiance EMS transported one patient from the scene.

Fire officials say the Honey Grove Volunteer Fire Department was not notified of the call due to a dispatcher’s decision that was “contrary to established dispatch protocol.” As a result, EMS crews were on scene without fire department support.

The department noted that Allegiance EMS crews serving Fannin County rely on local volunteer fire departments for assistance and backup on medical calls. Officials added that if multiple patients had been involved, the EMS crew would not have had enough personnel to safely provide care.

The fire chief and department officers said they have been in direct contact with the Fannin County Dispatch Supervisor and the sheriff to address the issue and ensure that all future calls within Honey Grove’s jurisdiction are properly dispatched to the department. The fire department relies solely on the county dispatch center for emergency notifications.

The Honey Grove Volunteer Fire Department emphasized that its members are volunteers who dedicate their time and expertise to serving the community, with more than half of the roster made up of career first responders.

The department expressed its thoughts and prayers for the individuals and families affected by the incident.
