Unattended Cooking Blamed for Apartment Fire That Displaced 15 in Longview

LONGVIEW, Texas - An apartment fire sparked by unattended cooking displaced 15 residents Wednesday afternoon at a Longview complex, though no injuries were reported, fire officials said.

The Longview Fire Department responded at approximately 12:49 p.m. on Feb. 4, 2026, to a reported fire at Townhouse South Apartments, located at 5518 West Loop 281. While en route, crews observed a large column of black smoke rising from the area.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames exiting one apartment, with fire extending into neighboring units. The incident commander declared a working fire and ordered an evacuation of the building as smoke and fire conditions spread to multiple apartments.

Crews initiated fire attack, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul operations, bringing the fire under control using on-scene resources. Fire protection systems were present in the building, and smoke alarms were functioning and activated, alerting residents to the danger.

No injuries were reported. However, 15 occupants were displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist residents affected by the displacement.

Following extinguishment, the Fire Marshal’s Office conducted an investigation that included scene documentation, witness interviews, and analysis of burn patterns. Investigators determined the fire originated on the stovetop and was accidental, caused by unattended cooking. Estimated property damage has not yet been determined.

The response included five fire engines, two ladder trucks, one ambulance, and seven support vehicles.

Fire officials reminded residents to never leave cooking unattended and to ensure smoke alarms are installed and working properly.
