WILLS POINT, TX – A juvenile has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of 55-year-old Derrick Abernathy inside a Wills Point residence Sunday evening.
Officers responded to a home in the 200 block of Bull Durham Road, where they found Abernathy dead from multiple gunshot wounds.
During questioning, the juvenile admitted to shooting Abernathy several times, according to Police Chief Aaron Long. The confession was made around 3:50 a.m. Monday.
The suspect has been transported to a Van Zandt County detention center. Authorities have not disclosed a motive, citing respect for the family’s privacy.
The Texas Rangers and the Van Zandt County District Attorney’s Office are assisting Wills Point Police with the ongoing investigation.
