BECKVILLE, Texas—A juvenile has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a residence on Jones Street, according to the Panola County Sheriff's Office.
At approximately 6:52 a.m. on Thursday, August 28, Panola County Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a shooting. Deputies, Constables, and first responders from the Beckville Volunteer Fire Department and UT Health EMS arrived at the scene. They found a juvenile with a handgun-inflicted gunshot wound and family members performing CPR. Despite life-saving measures, the injuries were fatal.
The Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division and the Justice of the Peace were called to the scene. Due to the child fatality, Child Protective Services will also be conducting an investigation.
Based on evidence and interviews, investigators have determined that the gunshot was self-inflicted. A report will be forwarded to the Criminal District Attorney's Office for review.
The Panola County Sheriff's Office extended its deepest sympathy to the family and to the Beckville Independent School District for the tragic loss. They also provided a reminder of the 988 crisis hotline for anyone struggling with thoughts of self-harm.
