Man Accused of Scamming Retirement Community Resident Arrested in Athens

A man accused of scamming a retirement community resident out of several thousand dollars under the pretense of roof repairs was arrested on June 20 in Athens, Texas.

On June 11, 2025, the Polk County Sheriff's Office received a report that a local elderly resident had been defrauded. Investigators identified the suspect as 38-year-old Matthew “Billy” Boyce. According to detectives, Boyce told the victim he would complete roof repairs, collected several thousand dollars, and never performed any work.

A felony warrant for Exploitation of the Elderly (State Jail Felony) was issued for Boyce’s arrest. He was located and taken into custody in Athens before being transferred to the Polk County Jail. Boyce has since bonded out.
