A 55-year-old man was killed late Sunday night after a tree collapsed onto a mobile home during severe weather in Camp County. Reports say that winds reached 80 mph during the storm.
Camp County Sheriff John Cortelyou said deputies were dispatched to the 3100 block of FM 556, just south of Pittsburg, around 11:45 p.m. on June 8, following reports that a tree had blown over and crashed through the center of a singlewide mobile home.
The victim, identified as Kevin Ford, was trapped under the fallen tree and died from his injuries. His mother, Carol Ford, who was also inside the home at the time, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Sheriff Cortelyou described the storm as a "weather phenomena" and said it created significant damage throughout the county. The conditions were so severe that the justice of the peace, called to the scene to pronounce Kevin Ford deceased, had difficulty reaching the home due to blocked roads.
"We had to direct a sheriff's department work crew that was out cutting trees to go cut trees across his road so we could get out to the scene," Cortelyou said. "It was just quite chaotic."
The incident remains under investigation.
