On the morning of June 6, 2025, Commerce Police Department officers responded to a 911 call reporting a man brandishing a knife in the 2100 block of Live Oak Street.
Officers arrived around 9:02 AM and located a white male matching the suspect description in front of the McDonald’s on Live Oak Street. Upon seeing the first officer, the suspect pulled a large knife from his waistband and brandished it.
Additional officers from Commerce PD and East Texas A&M University PD responded to assist. Despite repeated verbal commands, the man continued to threaten officers with the weapon.
Officers deployed less-than-lethal measures and were able to safely detain the suspect without serious injury. Commerce Fire Department and EMS also assisted at the scene.
The man was identified as Michael Dafft of Commerce. He was taken into custody at approximately 9:05 AM, processed at the Commerce Police Department, and transported to the Hunt County Jail.
Dafft faces charges including Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer, Retaliation, and Possession of a Controlled Substance in Penalty Group 1. His bond has been set at $117,500.
