A firearm belonging to Grayson County Sheriff William "Tony" Bennie was accidentally discharged by a teenager after being left behind in a Wendy’s restaurant restroom, according to statements released Saturday.
The incident occurred on June 7, 2025, at a Wendy’s located in Covington, Georgia, while Sheriff Bennie was traveling out of state with family. According to the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, Bennie removed his holstered firearm in the restroom and unintentionally left it behind when exiting.
A 15-year-old juvenile later entered the restroom, found the unsecured firearm, and discharged it while handling it. No injuries were reported.
The Covington Police Department conducted a full investigation and consulted with the Newton County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities determined there was no criminal intent or negligence under Georgia law, and no charges will be filed.
Sheriff Bennie issued a statement accepting full responsibility, saying, “I made a mistake. It was unintentional, but it was still a mistake and one I own fully. I am thankful no one was injured, and I hope this serves as a reminder to all gun owners about the importance of constant vigilance, especially around children.”
Sheriff Bennie remains in office, and the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and public safety.
