David Roy Mundt, 62, has been sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for the sexual assault of two young girls in separate cases dating back to 1986 and 1992.
On Oct. 28, 1992, a 7-year-old girl was taken from her bed and sexually assaulted in the backyard of a home in Rusk County, Texas. The suspect fled the scene. The Henderson Police Department investigated, and DNA evidence was submitted to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).
In a similar case, on July 6, 1986, a 3-year-old girl was kidnapped and sexually assaulted in Phoenix, Arizona.
In December 2022, the DPS Crime Laboratory in Garland, Texas, identified a possible DNA match between the Texas and Arizona cases. The Texas Rangers worked with the Phoenix Police Department, and DNA samples were sent for advanced testing and genealogy research.
On June 15, 2024, this research identified two brothers as potential suspects. David Roy Mundt was identified as a suspect, and a DNA sample was obtained through the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) program.
On August 7, 2024, the Texas Rangers, Texas Highway Patrol, and Longview Police Department arrested Mundt at his home in Gregg County, Texas.
Mundt was indicted by a Rusk County grand jury on two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child. He was convicted on April 25, 2025, and sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison.
