Two men from Powderly lost their lives Wednesday evening when a Cozy single-engine plane crashed in northern Smith County.
The crash occurred on private property near Burleson Lake sometime between 7 and 11 p.m., according to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies assisted the Texas Department of Public Safety at the scene.
The victims’ identities and ages have not yet been released.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation, with an investigator dispatched to the crash site. A preliminary report with factual findings is expected within 30 days. The final report, which will include the cause of the crash and any contributing factors, may take 12 to 24 months to complete.
The NTSB is urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has surveillance footage of the crash to email information to witness@ntsb.gov.
