On September 10, 2024, the Love Civic Center in Paris, Texas, hosted the official inauguration of Dr. Stephen Benson as the ninth president of Paris Junior College. The ceremony was part of PJC’s 100th anniversary celebration and featured a blend of music and testimonials.
The event included an invocation by Christopher Withrow, president of Phi Theta Kappa, and a performance of the “Star-Spangled Banner” by Dr. Michael Holderer, PJC music faculty. Dr. Lisa Elliott, Vice President of Student Services, served as the master of ceremonies.
Dr. Benson, demonstrating his passion for music, directed a volunteer choir in performances of “Joy in the Morning” and “For Good.” The choir, consisting of community volunteers, PJC alumni, staff, faculty, and the North Lamar High School choir, was accompanied by Patricia Fowzer on piano and Randy Bunch on trumpet.
Curtis Fendley, PJC Board of Regents president, presented the President’s Medal to Dr. Benson, formally installing him as president. The medal, considered a cornerstone of presidential regalia, was designed by President Emeritus Bobby R. Walters and retired jewelry faculty Ulla Raus.
Dr. Ted Spring, former president of New River Community & Technical College, praised Dr. Benson’s leadership and vision, drawing parallels between leading a choir and leading a college.
Dr. Johnette McKown, president of McLennan Community College, shared fond memories of working with Dr. Benson and commended his innovative and compassionate leadership.
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Benson emphasized the importance of honoring the past while looking forward to a bold future for Paris Junior College. He highlighted the college’s commitment to transforming lives and supporting communities. Benson also recognized Ouida Edmiaston Black, a 1943 PJC graduate, acknowledging her long-standing support for the institution.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by hundreds and marked a significant milestone in PJC’s centennial celebration.
