Jarvis Christian University to Host Annual MLK Prayer Breakfast, Featuring Alumna Dr. Tomika Duffey-Johnson as Guest Speaker

Jarvis Christian University is set to host its annual "Unity in the CommUnity" prayer breakfast on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 8:30 am. The event aims to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., known for his advocacy of fairness and equality through powerful, prayerful, and peaceful protest.

The breakfast, priced at $10, will contribute to community scholarships benefiting both current JCU students and local high school students in Wood and Upshur counties opting to attend JCU. Interested individuals can register for the Unity in the CommUnity Prayer Breakfast at www.jarvis.edu.

The MLK Prayer Breakfast will feature Jarvis alumna Dr. Tomika Duffey-Johnson as the guest speaker. Dr. Johnson, a respected servant leader, completed her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies at Jarvis in 2000. She holds a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Prairie View A&M and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership degree from Southern Methodist University. With 23 years of service in the Mesquite Independent School District, she recently assumed an executive director role with feeder schools at the Houston Independent School District.

Born and raised near Gilmer in Simpsonville, Texas, Dr. Duffey-Johnson is the second of eight children. At Jarvis, she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Her favorite quote from Dr. King is: “If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you must keep moving.”

The annual prayer breakfast serves as an opportunity for local community members and leaders to pray for area schools, businesses, city government, law enforcement, and JCU, fostering unity among diverse ethnicities throughout East Texas.

Jarvis Christian University is dedicated to educating a diverse population of students of all ages intellectually, socially, spiritually, and personally. The Jarvis Promise ensures an affordable education within an inclusive environment that is academically challenging yet supportive, nurturing, and responsive to the needs of each student.
