The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is taking strides towards creating a comprehensive public transportation plan for eastern Dallas, Kaufman, and Rockwall counties. To ensure that the transportation needs and preferences of residents and stakeholders are taken into account, NCTCOG is seeking input through a public meeting and a survey.
The public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 26th, at 6 p.m. and will be held at the Mesquite Arts Center. During the meeting, attendees can expect a brief presentation followed by an interactive mapping activity designed to help planners gain insights into travel patterns within the study area. Attendees will also have the opportunity to voice their opinions and provide insights into the transit needs of the study area.
The primary goal of the Eastern Dallas, Kaufman, and Rockwall Counties Transit Study is to develop a comprehensive public transportation plan for cities located in eastern Dallas County that are not currently served by the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART). Additionally, the study will explore supplementary transportation options to complement the existing STAR Transit system in Kaufman and Rockwall counties. It will also identify potential transit options, funding strategies, implementation plans, and assess potential community impacts. The study aims to create a clear transit vision, complete with goals and objectives, to guide the planning process and eventual implementation.
The study is prompted by projections of substantial population and employment growth in these counties by 2045. According to NCTCOG's long-term forecast, Rockwall County is expected to lead the region in growth by percentage, with an estimated 82% increase, closely followed by Kaufman County with an 81% projected growth rate by 2045.
