On September 22, 2023, at approximately 9:35 p.m., Sherman Police Department officers responded to a call at 1707 Baker Drive, which is the location of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2772. The call reported a disturbance, with the caller stating that a male suspect in the parking lot had cut their phone lines and was armed.
The first officer arrived at the scene at 9:39 p.m. Upon arrival, the officer encountered the suspect outside of the business premises. The situation escalated rapidly as the suspect pulled out a handgun, prompting the responding officer to discharge their weapon. The suspect, identified as Larry Wayne Harvey III, was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer involved in the incident was not injured.
In a twist of fate, it was discovered after the shooting that Larry Wayne Harvey III was already a person of interest sought by the Sherman Police Department. He was wanted in connection with a bank robbery that had occurred at First United Bank on September 16th. A warrant had been obtained for his arrest on charges of Aggravated Robbery, and Sherman PD Detectives were actively working to locate him.
As per department protocol, the Texas Rangers have taken charge of investigating this officer-involved shooting to ensure transparency and impartiality in the inquiry.
