VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas — Tragedy struck Van Zandt County for the second time in a matter of hours when an early morning house fire Wednesday, October 21, 2026, claimed the lives of three young children and left two other people, including a 10-year-old boy, critically injured.

The deadly fire occurred near the intersection of Van Zandt County Roads 4127 and 4128, where multiple fire departments responded shortly after 12:30 a.m. to reports of a burning residence with people trapped inside.

Authorities confirmed that two boys, ages 8 and 5, and a 3-year-old girl died in the fire. A 10-year-old boy and an adult remain hospitalized in critical condition.

The tragedy came just hours after Van Zandt County Sheriff's Deputy Adam Sherifi was fatally shot Tuesday night while assisting Canton police with a felony warrant service south of Canton.

The two incidents are unrelated, but their proximity has left the East Texas community confronting multiple devastating losses.

Four Fire Departments Respond to Reports of Children Trapped

Shortly after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, firefighters from the Canton, South Van Zandt, Ben Wheeler and Wills Point fire departments were dispatched to a reported structure fire near VZ CR 4127 and VZ CR 4128.

Initial reports indicated that occupants were trapped inside the burning residence.

When firefighters arrived, they learned that three occupants had managed to escape the home on their own.

However, four children remained trapped inside.

According to the initial report, fire conditions prevented crews from making a conventional entry into the structure.

Firefighters were forced to breach an exterior wall to gain access to the interior of the home and reach the trapped children.

Despite the dangerous conditions, crews quickly located all four children.

Three Young Children Die in Fire

Authorities confirmed that three of the children had already succumbed to the fire when firefighters reached them.

The victims were identified by age and gender as:

  • An 8-year-old boy

  • A 5-year-old boy

  • A 3-year-old girl

Their names have not been released.

The fourth child, a 10-year-old boy, survived but suffered critical injuries.

Officials have not disclosed the children's relationships to one another or provided additional details about where they were located inside the residence.

Child and Adult Airlifted to Parkland Hospital in Critical Condition

Emergency medical personnel transported multiple survivors for medical treatment.

One critically injured victim was initially taken to Christus Emergency Room in Canton before being transferred by medical helicopter to Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

Another critically injured victim was airlifted directly from near the fire scene to Parkland Hospital.

Authorities subsequently confirmed that the two critically injured survivors are an adult and a 10-year-old boy.

Two additional occupants were transported by ambulance to Parkland Hospital for precautionary evaluation.

Officials have not released further information about their injuries or medical conditions.

Fire Marshal Investigating Cause of Deadly Blaze

Van Zandt County Fire Marshal Kevin D. Palmer confirmed that his office is investigating the fire.

Palmer said the investigation remains in its early stages and that additional information may be released as investigators determine what happened.

Authorities have not identified the cause of the fire, where it originated inside the residence or whether working smoke alarms were present.

No determination has been announced regarding whether the fire was accidental or involved any other circumstances.

Second Tragedy Strikes Van Zandt County Within Hours

The deaths of the three children came during an already devastating period for Van Zandt County.

On Tuesday night, October 20, Van Zandt County Sheriff's Deputy Adam Sherifi was fatally shot while assisting the Canton Police Department in serving felony arrest warrants at a residence in the 4300 block of State Highway 198, south of Canton.

Authorities reported that a suspect opened fire from inside the residence toward law enforcement officers outside.

Sherifi was killed during the exchange of gunfire, and a Canton police officer was injured and transported to a hospital.

The suspect was subsequently found dead inside the residence.

The Texas Rangers are investigating that shooting.

Only hours later, firefighters and emergency responders were called to the fatal house fire that claimed the lives of three children.

Although the incidents are separate, both have brought profound loss to families and first responders across Van Zandt County.
