Gregg County Jury Sentences Repeat DWI Offender to Life in Prison

Jeffry Scott Webb

LONGVIEW, Texas - A Gregg County jury has sentenced a repeat drunken driving offender to life in prison after finding him guilty of driving while intoxicated for at least the third time.

According to the Gregg County District Attorney's Office, Judge Alfonso Charles formally sentenced Jeffry Scott Webb on July 15 following a two-day jury trial in the 124th District Court.

The jury found Webb guilty of Driving While Intoxicated, Third or More, after less than 45 minutes of deliberation.

During the punishment phase, jurors heard evidence of Webb's extensive criminal history, including multiple prior DWI convictions and two previous prison sentences in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. After considering that history, the jury assessed punishment at life in prison.

The conviction stemmed from an incident at the Majestic Inn in Longview, where police responded to a report of an intoxicated driver.

A witness told officers a man had been driving around the motel parking lot before parking and stumbling into a room.

Officers located Webb inside the room and testified that he displayed several signs of intoxication.

Investigators reviewed motel surveillance video, which showed Webb driving through the parking lot before exiting his vehicle and staggering toward a stairwell.

Webb refused to perform standardized field sobriety tests. Police later obtained a warrant signed by Judge Angie Konczak authorizing a blood draw.

Testing by the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Laboratory determined Webb's blood alcohol concentration was 0.272, more than three times Texas' legal limit of 0.08.

Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Tanya Reed and Baylee Walters prosecuted the case with assistance from District Attorney Investigator Tony Stone.

The Gregg County District Attorney's Office also recognized Longview Police Department Officers R. Eubanks, J. Bowman, L. Pelham and M. Castillo for their work on the investigation and testimony during the trial.
