Deputy Shoots Armed Suicidal Man During Confrontation at Henderson County Cemetery

HENDERSON COUNTY, Texas — A Henderson County Sheriff's deputy shot an armed man Sunday after authorities say the man pointed a pistol at the deputy during a confrontation at a cemetery.

According to the Henderson County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded at approximately 12:18 p.m. on July 5 to a report of a suicidal man at Malakoff Cemetery on County Road 1400.

When the first deputy arrived, the individual was armed with a handgun.

Authorities said the deputy gave the man multiple commands to drop the weapon, but he refused to comply.

Investigators said the man then raised the pistol toward the deputy. Fearing for his safety, the deputy fired his service weapon, striking the man in the abdomen.

The deputy immediately notified dispatch that shots had been fired and began providing life-saving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived.

The man was transported to UT Health Tyler, where he is listed in stable condition.

The Henderson County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Henderson County Fire Marshal's Office, the Malakoff Police Department, UT Health EMS, the Brownsboro Fire Department, and the Long Cove Fire Department.

In accordance with standard protocol, the officer-involved shooting has been turned over to the Texas Rangers and the Henderson County District Attorney's Office for independent investigation.
