Missing Teen Found Dead in Submerged Vehicle Following East Texas Flooding

HOUSTON COUNTY, Texas — A teenage driver reported missing Saturday was found deceased inside a submerged vehicle after an extensive search involving multiple law enforcement and emergency response agencies, according to Houston County Sheriff Zak Benge.

The search began around 11 a.m. on June 20 when the Houston County Sheriff's Office received a report that a teenage boy was overdue returning home near Houston County after leaving the Houston County Lake area.

Deputies immediately began searching roadways known to flood during heavy rain events, particularly along Farm-to-Market Road 229, which received significant rainfall during the early morning hours.

At the same time, sheriff's office dispatchers entered the teen into the missing and endangered persons database while Texas Department of Public Safety troopers utilized the Flock camera system to help determine the vehicle's direction of travel.

A major breakthrough came at approximately 1:45 p.m. when the Houston County Emergency Management Coordinator noticed damage to a guardrail along FM 229 near Loop 304.

The coordinator and a deputy began searching the area and discovered a vehicle bumper approximately 70 yards down a nearby creek. The bumper still had the missing teen's license plate attached.

A short distance farther downstream, searchers located the roof of a submerged vehicle.

Texas Parks and Wildlife search-and-rescue personnel, who had already been deployed in the region because of localized flooding, were called to the scene along with Houston County Search and Rescue teams.

Shortly after rescue crews arrived, they recovered the body of the missing teen from inside the vehicle.

Authorities have not publicly released the victim's identity.

The exact circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by the Crockett Police Department.

Sheriff Benge described the incident as a tragedy that will have a lasting impact on the victim's family and friends.

The recovery effort involved personnel from the Houston County Sheriff's Office, Crockett Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Houston County Emergency Management, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Crockett Fire Department, Houston County Search and Rescue, and Houston County EMS.

Officials continue to remind motorists to use extreme caution during flooding events and to avoid driving across water-covered roadways, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and limited visibility.
