Burglary Suspect in Freestone County Breaks into Home of Ex-Officer, Held at Gunpoint

On Wednesday morning, December 10th, shortly after 5 a.m., Freestone County deputies were dispatched to a burglary in progress on West Highway 84, between Teague and Mexia. What started as a routine call quickly turned into a dramatic confrontation.

Upon arrival, deputies learned that the suspect had been discovered inside the home by one of the residents—an ex-peace officer. The suspect had apparently taken it upon himself to shower in the bathroom before attempting to take a nap on the couch. Thankfully, the former officer maintained control of the situation, restraining the intruder at gunpoint until law enforcement arrived.

Deputies confirmed the suspect’s clothing and the towel he used were left in the bathroom, evidence of his ill-fated decision to make himself at home. He was arrested for Burglary of a Habitation and transported to the Freestone County Jail.

Sheriff J. Shipley praised the restraint and quick thinking of the ex-officer, noting, “This individual is extremely lucky he ran into someone with law enforcement training. Citizens should always lock their homes and remain vigilant, but in this case, training and composure prevented a potentially dangerous situation from escalating.”

Assisting agencies included the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office, Teague Police Department, and DPS. Sheriff Shipley emphasized that this suspect was not connected to ongoing vehicle burglaries in the area, but the incident serves as a reminder to always secure your property.
