Second Suspect Arrested in 2014 Texarkana Cold Case Killing of Xavier Rollins

Demontre Collins

Texarkana police have made another arrest in the decade-old murder of Xavier Rollins, bringing new progress to a case that once appeared all but unsolvable. Rollins was found shot to death outside an apartment in the 1000 block of College Drive on June 17, 2014. In the early days of the investigation, detectives chased every tip they could find, but each one led nowhere. As time passed, the case went cold.

That changed in 2023 when Detective Thomas Shaddix reopened the file and began exploring new forensic tools that weren’t available when the crime first occurred. His work uncovered fresh DNA testing options, which ultimately led to the arrest of the first suspect, Cameron Cheatham, on a Capital Murder charge in October 2024.

Detective Shaddix kept pushing to identify a second suspect. A tip eventually pointed him toward Demontre Collins, and updated DNA analysis confirmed a match to evidence collected at the scene. Investigators secured a Capital Murder warrant, and Collins was arrested during a traffic stop on November 11.

Both Collins and Cheatham are being held in the Bi-State Jail on $1 million bonds each. Police say the arrests mark a major step toward long-awaited justice for Rollins and his family.
