BONHAM, TX – Mayor H. L. Compton has officially resigned from his position as Mayor of Bonham to pursue the office of Fannin County Judge. Under Article 16, Section 65 of the Texas Constitution, elected officials must step down to run for another office.
In his resignation letter submitted on December 2, 2025, Mayor Compton expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve the Bonham community. Following his departure, Mayor Pro Tem John Burnett will assume mayoral duties to ensure continuity of city operations, as outlined in the City Charter.
A special election for the Mayor’s office is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2026, coinciding with the regular election for other open positions. City officials extended their gratitude to Mayor Compton for his years of service and dedication to Bonham.
