Texas Rangers Investigating In-Custody Death at Grayson County Jail

SHERMAN, TX - The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the Texas Rangers are investigating the in-custody death of 45-year-old Bryan Jeffery Curtis.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, on October 26, 2025, at around 7:00 p.m., Curtis was brought to the Grayson County Jail by Denison Police on a charge of Violation of a Protective Order. During the intake process, officials said Curtis was coherent, compliant, and no force was used. Shortly after, he began experiencing a medical emergency.

On-site medical staff immediately began life-saving measures, and Sherman Fire Department paramedics responded to the facility. Curtis was transported to Sherman Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.

In keeping with standard procedure, the Texas Rangers were contacted to conduct an independent investigation. The Sheriff’s Office also announced it is performing an internal review of the incident.

In a statement, Sheriff Tony Bennie and Chief Deputy Brad Oliver expressed condolences to Curtis’s family and loved ones, emphasizing the department’s commitment to transparency and inmate safety.

The Sheriff’s Office asked for patience and understanding as the investigation continues. All media inquiries regarding the case are being directed to the Texas Rangers Public Information Office.
