NAVARRO COUNTY, Texas - A Navarro County jury sentenced David Bruce Coffman, 66, to nine years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) after finding him guilty of Failure to Comply with Sex Offender Registry with a previous conviction.

The guilty verdict was returned after only ten minutes of jury deliberation on Tuesday, October 22, 2025.

Details of the Offense and Prior Record

Coffman, who was convicted of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child in 2003, failed to report to the Navarro County Sheriff’s Office to update his information during his required annual 60-day window.   On the 2003 conviction, the victim was a 12 year old girl. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison which he served.

  • An arrest warrant was issued on May 7, 2024, and Coffman was arrested the next day by the Navarro County Sheriff’s Office.

  • Coffman’s attorney argued that he failed to report because his driver’s license was expired, and he was having difficulty securing a renewal appointment, which he believed prevented him from complying with the registry.

During the sentencing phase, the prosecution presented evidence showing Coffman had been convicted of the same offense in Ellis County in 2015, in addition to a 1987 burglary conviction. After deliberating for about an hour, the jury returned the nine-year sentence.

Following the sentence, Coffman pleaded guilty to an unrelated charge of possession of a controlled substance and received a concurrent nine-year sentence. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Thomas Stephenson and Amber Slaton, and First Assistant District Attorney Andrew Wolf.
