Henderson County Man Fatally Shot, Suspect in Custody After Westwood Beach Incident

Chuck Brady Norris

On Monday, August 25, at approximately 8:54 p.m., the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting near Shady Trail in Westwood Beach, south of Chandler.

Deputies found 35-year-old Cory Starnes suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders and witnesses, Starnes died at the scene.

Investigators determined that Starnes and 18-year-old Chuck Brady Norris had been involved in an altercation at Starnes’ residence. During the dispute, Norris retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and shot Starnes before fleeing.

An arrest warrant for murder was issued by 392nd Judicial District Judge Scott McKee, along with a search warrant for the residence. Justice of the Peace Precinct 3 Tony Duncan conducted the inquest and ordered an autopsy through American Forensics.

Later, Norris contacted the Sheriff’s Office from a convenience store in Frankston, stating his intent to surrender. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Henderson County Jail, where he awaits arraignment.

The Henderson County District Attorney’s Office, Texas Rangers, Smith County Sheriff’s Office, and Lamar County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation, which remains ongoing.
