Appeals Court Affirms 99-Year Sentence for Convicted Felon on Firearm Charge in Upshur County

Jimmy Wayne Skinner

TEXARKANA, TX – The Sixth Court of Appeals of Texarkana has affirmed a jury's decision to convict Jimmy Wayne Skinner, 51, of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon as a Habitual Offender, upholding his 99-year prison sentence.

The conviction and sentence stem from an incident on February 2, 2024, when the Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant. Officers discovered methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and loaded guns near where Skinner was sitting.

According to court records, Skinner was uncooperative during the search, stating he "ain't afraid to go to jail" and attempting to block officers from entering the living quarters.

In its decision, the Court of Appeals stated, "There are sufficient affirmative links to establish that Skinner had possession of the shotgun. The testimony and the physical evidence support Skinner's proximity and access to both the contraband and the shotgun. Skinner's incriminating statement and actions provide links to the contraband and to the shotgun. We affirm the trial court's judgment and sentence."
