A male subject died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Monday, June 23, 2025, at a local cemetery in Polk County, despite extensive efforts by law enforcement to intervene.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office and the Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Division responded to a report of a suicidal individual. The man had made several statements, both on the 911 call and upon officers' arrival, indicating his intent to commit suicide by shooting himself.
Deputies and Troopers engaged with the male for an extended period, attempting to de-escalate the situation and connect him with mental health services. During an attempt by law enforcement to gain control of the individual to prevent him from harming himself, the man grabbed his personal firearm and shot himself.
Medical assistance was immediately provided, and he was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers Division.
