Suspect Arrested in Fatal Texarkana Drive-By Shooting

Benjamin Brem

Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the May 10th drive-by shooting that left 21-year-old Jaylen Betts dead and another man injured.

Over the weekend, 24-year-old Benjamin Brem was taken into custody in Houston on several Texarkana arrest warrants. The arrest followed an investigation led by Detective Casey Schmidt, who worked alongside Houston officers to locate and apprehend Brem.

Just after midnight on May 10, Texarkana Police responded to a shots-fired call in the 1300 block of Carroll Street. Officers arrived to find Betts fatally shot inside a home. A 52-year-old man who was also in the residence sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Christus St. Michael Hospital.

Investigators determined that over 50 rounds had been fired into the house from the street before the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle.

Brem is expected to be transported back to Texarkana in the coming days, where he will be booked into the Bi-State Jail on charges of Murder, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Evading Arrest.
