A late-night shooting at a crowded pool party in Camp County claimed the life of a 21-year-old college basketball player and injured two others on Saturday, May 25, 2024.

The Camp County Sheriff’s Office received reports of multiple shots fired just after midnight at a gathering near Highway 11, east of Pittsburg and close to the Titus County line. Due to the size of the crowd, Camp County requested backup. Troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety and deputies from the Titus County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

Three individuals were struck by gunfire. One victim was airlifted to a hospital in Tyler, where he was later pronounced dead. The two others sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The deceased was identified as Jamarion Brown, a 21-year-old junior at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. A 2020 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, Brown was a standout basketball player and previously attended Southwest Christian College before transferring to Henderson State, where he played one season.

The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation in coordination with Camp County authorities.

In a statement, Henderson State University expressed deep sorrow over Brown’s death. Describing him as a beloved member of the Reddie men’s basketball team and a respected student, the university praised his character, competitive spirit, and impact on the campus community.

Grief counseling resources have been made available to students at Henderson State. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
